Breakfast Serves Big Help Women Lose Weight

Researchers from Venezuela and the United States found that women with a breakfast high in carbohydrates and protein, followed by a diet low in carbohydrates and low in calories in the rest of the day, is more successful in weight loss than women who use a strict low-calorie diet method alone.

The research was presented at The Endocrine Society's 90th Annual Meeting in San Francisco, June 17, 2008, by principal investigator Dr. Daniela Jakubowicz of the Hospital de Clinicas, Caracas, Venezuela. Plans to publish this research in medical journals have not been planned.

Jakubowicz, who worked in the research together with researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, USA, said: "Most research on weight loss claim that a low carbohydrate diet method is a good method to lose weight". He then continued that the low-carb diet, "will increase our desire to eat carbohydrate foods and lowering metabolism. The result, after a while losing weight, going back to obesity in the not too distant future ".

Results: Breakfast Helps Women Lose Weight

For the present study, they studied 94 women who are inactive and obese, halve the 46 women on the low-carb diet and 48 women in the new diet in 8 months. Both dietary methods, such as low-fat and total calories, but differ in carbohydrate consumption every day.
Women in the low-carbohydrate diet method take 1,085 calories per day is divided into 17 grams of carbohydrates, 51 grams of protein and 78 grams of fat. In this diet, breakfast is given in small portions, contains 290 calories and only 7 grams of carbohydrates, such as bread, fruit, cereal, and milk. And also, women in this diet method can eat up to 12 grams of protein in the morning, such as meat and eggs.

The second group, with a large portion breakfast diet method, the woman takes 1,240 calories per day, divided into 97 grams of carbohydrates, 93 grams of protein and 46 grams of fat (compared with the other group, this group ate less fat but more carbohydrates and protein every day). In this diet, breakfast was provided in large portions, and lunch is only given food by 395 calories while dinner is only 235 calories.

In the first 4 months, this research focuses on weight loss 4 months while the second focuses on maintaining weight loss. The results showed:

- After 4 months, the group with a low-carbohydrate diet can reduce the average weight of 12.7 kg.
- After 4 months, the group with a large serving breakfast diet method can reduce the average weight of 10.4 kg.

The researchers suggest that a diet with a large serving breakfast meal is more effective in weight loss because it can control the appetite and also reduce the desire to eat carbohydrate foods containing sugar and starch. Jakubowicz also said that a diet with a large portion breakfast methods are healthier than the method of low-carb diets because these women eat more fruits to get more vitamins and fiber.
