Therapy using growth hormone can improve final height a child who has been diagnosed with short stature. This can be done even if the child is not growth hormone deficiency, based journal published in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).
Growth hormone (GH-hormone) has been proven effective in the treatment of GH deficiency in children with short stature, but its effect on GH deficient children remains unclear.
"In our study, treatment with a dose-dependent GH will increase final height in children with short stature who did not have GH deficiency, in the sense that GH will increase the height of more than 3 inches, with some cases even reached 8 inches," said Kestin Albertsson-Wikland, MD, Ph.D., professor at the Goteborg Pediatric Growth research Center at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, the chairman of the study.
In this study, the researchers evaluated the effects of GH therapy in 150 children with short stature over a period of 20 years. These children were randomized (randomized) in the category without therapy, with low-dose GH therapy, or in the high-dose GH therapy.
Although there are several other studies to evaluate the effect of GH therapy in children with short stature, but this study has concluded that the better because this is the only study that used a randomization method (random), controlled study using two different doses of GH per day in children before puberty were followed until the end of their growth (final height).
"A lot of variables that are known to affect the growth response to GH therapies, such as birth length and early growth in the 1st year of life," said Dr. Albertson-Wikland. "The study also found that children from parents of normal height respond better than those who are born of parents with short stature.
"Future research will aim to find the right dose according to the response of the child to increase his height.
